Kitui School, located in the heart of Kitui County, Kenya, is one of the country’s most prominent government-aided national boys’ boarding schools. It has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence and has produced numerous leaders in Kenyan public life.
»Founding and Early Years
The school was established in 1947 during the British colonial era. Originally known as the Government African School (GAS) Kitui, it was part of a colonial initiative to provide education to the local population in the then Kitui District.
In its early years, it served as a primary school before gradually transitioning into a secondary school. By the 1960s, following Kenya’s independence, it became a fully-fledged secondary institution, expanding its facilities to accommodate more students from the Akamba community and across the country.
»Rise to National Status
Kitui School eventually earned its status as a National School. This designation is reserved for a select group of schools in Kenya that admit students with the highest scores in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) from across all 47 counties.
The school’s history is defined by its consistent performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE). It frequently appears among the top-performing schools in the Eastern region and nationally, particularly noted for its strong science and mathematics departments.
»Motto and Identity
The school operates under the motto:
”Umiisyo na Wia” (Kamba for “Perseverance and Work”)
This motto reflects the school’s culture of discipline and hard work, which has been a cornerstone of its identity for over seven decades. The students are often referred to as “The Scholars,” a nod to the school’s academic focus.
»Infrastructure and Facilities
Over the years, the school has undergone significant modernization:
- Expansion: From a few classrooms in 1947 to a sprawling campus with modern science laboratories, a well-stocked library, and computer labs.
- Dormitories: The school utilizes a house system, which fosters a sense of community and healthy competition through inter-house sports and academic contests.
»Notable Alumni
Kitui School has an influential alumni network, often referred to as Old Boys. Many former students have gone on to hold senior positions in:
- Government and Politics: Including various Members of Parliament, Governors, and Cabinet Secretaries.
- Academia: Numerous professors and researchers serving in Kenyan and international universities.
- Corporate Sector: Leaders in engineering, law, and the financial sectors.
Today, Kitui School remains a symbol of academic prestige in Kenya, continuing to maintain high standards of discipline and educational output.
