Academic & Extracurricular Profile
As a C1 National School, the institution is prepared to offer the three main pathways of the Senior School (Grades 10, 11, and 12):
1. STEM Pathway
Equipped with modern laboratories and a history of strong performance in the sciences, the school is a hub for students pursuing medicine, engineering, and technology-based careers.
2. Arts and Sports Science
This is a core strength for the school. St. Joseph’s is nationally recognized for its dominance in Hockey, consistently representing the Eastern Region at the National Games. Under the CBC, this excellence is formalized into a specialized learning pathway.
3. Social Sciences
Offering a robust curriculum for students interested in humanities, languages, and business studies.
The history of St. Joseph’s Girls’ High School – Kibwezi is a story of rapid transformation from a local school in the semi-arid regions of Makueni to a National School recognized for its discipline and sporting excellence.
1. Foundations and Catholic Heritage
The school was founded as a Catholic institution sponsored by the Catholic Diocese of Wote (formerly part of the Machakos Diocese). It was established to address the need for high-quality education for girls in the Kibwezi region. The Catholic values of service, hard work, and integrity are embedded in its operations, which led to the adoption of the motto: “Self Discipline Promotes Excellence.”
2. Rise to National Stardom
For many years, St. Joseph’s Kibwezi operated as a provincial (later Extra-County) school. However, its consistent performance in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and its disciplined environment caught the attention of the Ministry of Education.
- National Upgrade: Due to its expanding infrastructure and academic consistency, it was upgraded to National School status.
- CBC Transition: In 2026, it was officially designated as a Cluster C1 National School under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework. This makes it a premier center for Grade 10-12 students across Kenya.
3. The “Golden Girls” of Hockey
No history of the school is complete without mentioning its dominance in sports. St. Joseph’s Kibwezi is a household name in Kenyan high school sports, particularly in Girls’ Hockey.
- Regional Dominance: The school has dominated the Eastern Region titles for over a decade.
- National Impact: They are perennial contenders at the National Games, often finishing in the top ranks. This sporting culture has helped the school qualify as a center for the Arts and Sports Science Pathway under the new CBC system.
