The Comprehensive History & Identity of Machakos School
Machakos School, popularly known as “Macha” or “The Grandmaster,” is one of Kenya’s most storied national boys’ schools. It represents a blend of century-old colonial history and modern academic excellence.
1. Historical Evolution: From Technical to National
Founded in 1915, the institution was originally established by the colonial government as a Primary Technical School. Unlike many of its peers founded by missionaries, “Macha” was a government-run project focused on vocational skills.
- 1915–1940s: Focused on carpentry, masonry, and tailoring. It was locally known as “Kwa Matingi” (a reference to Mr. Martin, a popular principal of that era).
- 1950: Transitioned into a formal secondary school.
- 1958: Introduced Advanced Level (“A-Level”) classes.
- 2011: Officially elevated to National School status, now admitting top students from all 47 counties.
2. Identity & Philosophy
The school’s identity is defined by its crest, colors, and the “Aisire” spirit.
- Official Motto: Ûî wî mbee (Kamba for “Knowledge/Wisdom is First”).
- Common Slogan: Aisire (Kamba for “They have passed”), reflecting a culture of guaranteed success.
- School Colors: Grey and Black, symbolizing dignity and authority.
KNEC Code: 12300001 (marking its position as the premier school in the region).
3. Academic Prowess (Recent Trends)
The school is a consistent “heavy hitter” in the KCSE. The administration’s strategy of completing the syllabus by May has led to a significant upward trend in mean scores.
